John E. Burrows (curator)John has an MSc in Botany from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg and has been employed by Buffelskloof Nature Reserve since 1988, during which time he has guided the development of the Herbarium to what it is today.
He is a prolific plant collector and he, together with his wife Sandie, has written a number of books on the southern African flora, either on their own, or as co-authors. He has presented papers at a number of international symposia and continues to explore the botany of southern Africa, describe new species and write about the flora.
Sandra (‘Sandie’) M. Burrows (Botanical Illustrator and Associate Collector)Sandie is an experienced field botanist and one of South Africa’s top botanical illustrators, having illustrated all her and her husband John’s books and publications, as well as the monumental 30-year work on the Flora of the Witwatersrand. She, together with her husband, is working on a revision of the genus Asparagus in south-central Africa. She is a highly sought-after illustrator of scientific papers in South Africa.
Barbara C. Turpin (Herbarium Manager)Barbara is a talented viola player and ‘reformed’ music teacher, but it was her interest in plants that saw her taken on to manage the Herbarium and database all its specimens. Using the data-basing program BRAHMS, her skill with the program has attracted numerous BRAHMS-related queries by other small herbaria in the country and she continues to train students and botanists alike in its use.
Barbara has a deep interest in the genus Hypoxis and the family Commelinaceae, as well as a passion and extensive knowledge of the local wild flowers.
