Situated within the well-preserved and biodiverse Buffelskloof Nature Reserve, the Research and Education facilities provide an ideal location for biological research and student field work experience, within a relatively secure area rich in plant species and a wide variety of plant communities.
Staff and students from as far away as the DRC are to be found studying at the centre.
Pretoria is the nearest major university. A Memorandum of Cooperation has been signed between this University and the John Rae Trust.

The Buffelskloof Nature Reserve, together with the its facilities and subsidised accommodation, make it an ideal venue for student field trips.

Short Courses and group meetings
The Research Centre hosts short courses on topics ranging from Plant Identification to Thesis Writing, Botanical Latin, GIS and Herbarium Data Capture.
Public awareness of what riches are still there in wild areas is vital. The Herbarium is open to all groups of plant lovers, citizen scientists and botanical artists.
